Duck

It never really occurs to you

until it's unavoidable

that desks

in an elementary school classroom

are lined up in rows

like ducks

at a shooting gallery.

  1. Oh, boy! This short poem is loaded! I love the double meaning (noun and verb) of the word "duck".

Here's a companion poem which is related to your poem "Duck" in that it is a poem about trying to find perspective.

    Tiny Incremental Gains

Self-imposed lists of what to do,
Reminding that it can’t be done in
    One shot.

It’s a piecemeal thing, this thing we
    Call existence, and requires much
    Forethought,

    And afterthought, and patience, of
Course, as we slowly build and grow, not
    For naught.

Don’t ask me if I’m satisfied
    With these tiny incremental gains.
    I’m not.

  2. Love the rhymes, and the sentiment, as someone who ought not worry so much about fraught situations, lessons I’ve been taught (but not fully got), goals sought, being punctual on the dot, the damage to the world that bad actors have wrought (hell’s where they should rot), wars that are being fought, and so much more that I’ve suddenly forgot.

  3. You've hit the spot on what is what, and not on what it's not.

    (I'm not a robot.)
