Bill of Goods

CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE SONG

You move me, you groove me,

Then you disapprove me.

You bait me, you hate me,

Then you castigate me.

You judge me, begrudge me,

You try but you can't budge me.

You choose me, abuse me,

You know you're gonna lose me.

It's a bill of goods you're selling,

Comes with every thought of 'should',

I should have done better,

I should have done more,

I should have tried harder,

I should have kept score.

It's a bill of goods your selling,

Rotten to the core,

This bill of goods you're selling,

Why can't I ignore?

There are truths we can't admit,

And the mirror sometimes lies.

It's easier to be dishonest

About things you can't deny.

You tell me that you love me,

You tell me that you care.

I wish I could believe you,

You know that I won't dare.

It's a bill of goods you're selling,

Comes with every thought of 'should',

I should have been better,

I should have done more,

I should have tried harder,

I should have been keeping score.

It's a bill of goods your selling,

Rotten to the core,

This bill of goods you're selling.

Why can't I ignore?

You move me, you groove me,

Then you disapprove me.

You bait me, you hate me,

Then you castigate  me.

You judge me, begrudge me,

You try but you can't budge me.

You choose me, abuse me,

You know you're gonna lose me.

You're gonna lose me.

You're gonna lose me.

You're gonna lose me.

In a previous song you claim that you're "no Bob Dylan," but you're sounding more and more like him all the time, complete with strong themes of disenfranchisement, dylanesque rhymes, and of course the harmonica. (You've got to re-mix, though, to bring out the vocals more.) For all that we have in common, it has always been a mystery to me why you are not a chasid of Bob ...but I feel you may be breaking down. Have you seen the movie yet, btw?

I like Bob more every day. Must have something to do with age and wisdom. But I’m still a guy who prefers the clarity of a simple straightforward image. The harmonica to me is the perfect instrument precisely because of its simplicity and clarity. The direct connection to breath. I haven’t seen the movie yet. But I watched Ex Machina last week and I’m still thinking about it. Absolutely must watch it. My last song is the result of how disturbed I was from it.

I thought I saw Ex Machina when it came out (or I could be confusing it with Her). I will attempt to watch/re-watch some time soon, based on your recommendation. We saw the Dylan movie (A Complete Unknown) here in Jerusalem earlier this week. It's definitely worth watching. Every actor nails the character they are portraying, beginning with Timothy Chalamet as Dylan. Ed Norton deserves an Oscar for his portrayal of Pete Seeger. A lot of great musical performances, and a pretty good depiction of the "legendary" rise of Dylan to stardom.

I must say, I’m not compelled to watch the Dylan movie. I recently watched Don’t Look Back, which was an interesting document of that moment history, and before that the Scorsese documentary on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, which I thought was excellent and sparked my interest in Dylan’s music. A fictional version feels to me like listening to a cover when you can just as well play the original, which is usually better. Does the movie offer anything genuinely ‘revealing’ about Dylan?
