Riverbank Blues

CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE SONG

We went down to the riverbank my little gal and I,

We went down to the riverbank my little gal and I,

We went down to the riverbank,

Where I made my gal cry.

You know the river's so deep, how did she make it across,

You know the river's so deep, how did she make it across,

You know I love that little girl so much,

Won't get over my loss.

Sometimes I ask myself, how could I stoop so low.

Said I ask myself, how could I stoop so low.

You know it's so hard,

When you're livin alone.

Told her I loved her before she went away,

I say I told that girl I loved her before she went away,

You know that little girl,

Took my secret to her grave.

I go back to the riverbank, and I fall down on my knees,

I go back to the riverbank, and I fall down on my knees,

I go back to the riverbank,

Where I hope she hears my pleas.

You are a bona fide blues man, my friend! And I love the recurring guitar riff! Very nice! You ever listen to David Bromberg? If not, you should. He is a blues man par excellence. And your voice is a bit like his. Check him out on YouTube, if you aren't familiar with his songs. "Dehlia" "Suffer to Sing the Blues" "I like to Sleep late in the Morning" "I Will Not be Your Fool" "Bullfrog Blues" Try those for starters. He also does great versions of "Mr. Bojangles" "What a Wonderful World" and "Such a Night".

The deeper the blues the better. I've started to realize that the more basic the musical form is the more complex it can be, and richer, and more soulful, and ultimately true. This one was inspired by Son House's Death Letter Blues. Don't know how well you know him. The power and grooviness of his style. Wish I had his voice. Yes, I am aware of Dave Bromberg. I know he recorded with Dylan. But I discovered him through his great version of Blind Blake's song "Early This Morning" which I spent some time trying to learn. The guitar work is first rate. I will definitely look up the other songs you recommend.

Love it!!! You must be a reincarnation of a man who lived in the Deep South in the mid-20th century because you capture both the feel and the mood perfectly. Keep Blues-ing!
