This is a gem, my brother. Every word. "But there is no real calm/in the current" ... the word "current " is the water stream you are describing and is also the current situation in the world (as in "current events") which keep moving us along, ever so rapidly (""the rapids") and perilously. No calm.
It's so hard to find any calm these days. The world is shouting at us all the time and moving so fast. We get so caught up with it, negotiating preoccupation with the surface turbulence. Only in the calm can we find the depth that is actually there, but not noticeable. But then, backed into a corner to find refuge, begins to feel like we're trapped. Sometimes it feels like a no win situation.
